Monday Style Icon - Ulyana Sergeenko
You say who, I say Ulyana Sergeenko! A tsarina and a Russian couture designer. According to Telegraph, Ulyana is an embodiment of old-school glamour. She is known for her over-the-top designs, and with every season Ulyana tells a story about her native Russia. Vogue writes that Sergeenko and her business partner, Frol Burimskiy, produce some of the most theatrical clothes on the couture schedule.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, Sergeenko told that growing up in the fashion starved former Soviet Union, she had to sew her own clothes: "I was well-known in school because I would always change the designs. I broke all the rules. So in a way I was born in couture”. She also revealed that she is an avid flea market shopper, and that her muses are her grandmother and Galliano.
Long before she has become a prominent designer, Ulyana has been a regular at fashion shows, and as Telegraph further tell us, ‘she soon grew frustrated that pieces she had collaborated on with designers were later appearing in collections unattributed to her’. That is why she took matters into her own hands, and launched her own couture label. What a story, and what a woman!
